At Intouch, we know that our diverse workforce makes us stronger; we also love a celebration, particularly as the days grow shorter and colder. So, when given the opportunity to sample hot, delicious food, visit with coworkers and learn about different cultures, we take it.
Diwali is a five-day festival of lights — celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month of Kartika, between mid-October and mid-November — by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world. The festival symbolizes the spiritual triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. It features food, fireworks, the lighting of oil lamps and the creation of beautiful floor or ground designs called rangoli, which may be made of colored rice, flower petals, colored sand, or dry flour. Dussehra, another Hindu holiday, also celebrates the victory of good over evil and is commemorated just before Diwali. We recently had two opportunities to celebrate these important holidays – one in our Kansas City office, and one in Mumbai, where our Indian office is located.
In Kansas City, we celebrated with traditional Indian dishes and decorations. Employees brought in a delicious spread of chickpea curry, chicken curry, baby corn and chicken appetizers, rice, naan, and a variety of desserts. In the spirit of Diwali, the event raised also raised money for Safehome to help provide a healing atmosphere for survivors of domestic violence. On the other side of the world, a few KC folks who were visiting the Mumbai office got to experience the celebration where it originated. Check out a few photos of the events.
